Moldflow® Material Characterization

Beaumont Advanced Processing Lab offers plastic material characterization and data fitting services that are required for the successful application of Autodesk® Moldflow® and Helius® software packages. Beaumont, in close cooperation with Autodesk and their development group, offer Moldflow’s highest level “Gold” certification material characterization tests. These tests include both specialized proprietary Autodesk methods as well as more conventional material characterization techniques.

With greater pressures on the performance and manufacturing requirements today, it is important to decrease the time in development and the number of iterations during mold conditioning. With accurate material characterization, the user will be able to realize greater accuracy in simulation prediction in manufacturability of the design, the process design, through to part performance. With greater simulation prediction comes greater part quality and decrease time to market.

CTE and Mechanicals (MPL-355)

Molding and preparation of plaques for testing of both coefficient of linear thermal expansion, which is the ratio of the change in length per degree, following ASTM D696 Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion method, and also mechanical properties in the form of Poisson Ratio and Tensile modulus. Poisson’s ratio in the direction of flow and perpendicular to the direction of flow to failure. ASTM D638 and ASTM E132 test methods applied.

Shear Viscosity by Capillary Rheometer (MPL-032)

Measure of material’s resistance to flow under shear deformation. It is a measure of wall shear stress per shear rate of a flowing sample as a function of shear rate and temperature. Measurement of properties by Capillary Rheometer following ATM D3835 standard methods.

Shear Viscosity by IMR (MPL-035)

Measure of material’s resistance to flow under shear deformation. It is a measure of wall shear stress per shear rate of a flowing sample as a function of shear rate and temperature. Measurements are performed on an Injection Molding Rheometer using an AML (Autodesk Materials Lab) method based on ASTMD5422, ASTM D3835, and ISO 11443 standard methods.

Pressure Dependent Viscosity by IMR (MPL-036)

Add-on to ‘Shear Viscosity by IMR’ performed with an adjustable exit restrictor to increase pressure for a given flow rate and temperature. Test performed at maximum melt temperature. Data obtained at three additional pressure levels with adjustment of restrictor.

High Shear Viscosity by IMR (MPL-037)

Add-on to ‘Shear Viscosity by IMR’ incorporating two additional viscosity runs ran separately as opposed to typical inline viscosity testing. Tests ran at maximum melt temperature. Results are added to the Shear Viscosity by IMR test data set to create the Cross-WLF model.

Specific Heat (MPL-050)

Measure of how much a material changes temperature with change in heat energy. It is the energy required to raise a unit mass of material by one degree (Celsius) in temperature. ASTM E1269 and ASTM D3417 standard methods apply. Transition Temperature and Ejection Temperature are calculated based on ASTM D3418.

Thermal Conductivity (MPL-056)

Measure of a material’s ability to transfer heat by conduction. It is the rate of heat transfer by conduction, per unit length and degrees. Measured using Transient Plane Heat Source technique, ISO 22007-2 standard method applied.

Shrinkage (MPL-205)

Measures the difference in the dimensions of the plastic part and the mold. A series of measurements using the AML (Autodesk Materials Lab) test method are performed to show the effects of the molding conditions upon part shrinkage. Results can be modeled by Corrected Residual In-Mold Stress (CRIMS) model or by the Residual Strain model.
